First Freedom Life is an independent, veteran-owned insurance brokerage. Product availability and suitability vary; no investment, tax or legal advice is provided.

An annuity maturity date can be different from the date its guaranteed rate ends or its surrender charges expire. Before choosing what to do next, identify the date on the insurer’s notice and what that particular provision requires. An approaching deadline is a reason to review the contract; it does not automatically mean you should replace it.

Separate three dates before making an election

Date or periodWhat to confirm
Rate-guarantee endWhen the stated interest guarantee ends and which renewal terms, election window or default apply.
Surrender-charge endWhen the relevant withdrawal-charge schedule expires, including whether later purchase payments have separate schedules.
Contract maturity or annuity dateWhether this is a scheduled income-start date, which elections are available and when the insurer must receive instructions.

Fidelity describes a fixed annuity’s interest guarantee as lasting for a specified period. That period alone does not explain every later contract deadline. For MYGA-specific renewal questions, see the MYGA guide.

The New York Department of Financial Services explains the maturity-date and annuitization connection. Use your own contract and applicable state terms to establish what that label means for you; do not substitute another owner’s dates or options.

What does “out of surrender” mean?

It usually describes an annuity whose applicable surrender-charge period has ended. It does not establish that every withdrawal is free of other consequences. Ask the issuer for the amount payable on your intended transaction date, including any remaining charges, adjustments and effect on benefits.

Investor.gov separates surrender charges, taxes, contract adjustments and benefit reductions. An account value or income-benefit base is not a substitute for an actual withdrawal or surrender quote. The market value adjustment guide explains that particular contract question.

Read the notice before choosing an option

Ask which date requires action, which options are available and what happens if you do nothing. Confirm whether instructions must be received by a deadline, rather than merely mailed by it. Request clarification before submitting an election you do not understand.

If you want income, ask for the available payment options, beneficiary treatment and continued access to cash under each choice. A rate period ending is not, by itself, a promise that monthly payments will begin. Compare the actual terms with your intended income date.

Include keeping the contract in the comparison

Review existing guarantees, benefits, costs and liquidity before considering a replacement. A new annuity may start another surrender-charge period, and existing benefits may not transfer. A higher advertised rate or bonus alone does not establish that moving the money improves your situation.

Our 1035 exchange explanation addresses a separate question: whether an eligible exchange can defer recognition of gain. It does not make replacement the default choice.

Keep tax questions separate from contract dates

Expiration of surrender charges does not make a withdrawal tax-free. Identify whether the annuity is held in an IRA or another retirement arrangement, or personally outside one. Have a qualified tax professional review the applicable treatment before taking money out.

IRS Publication 575 discusses annuity distributions and exchanges. Receiving cash and buying another annuity generally is not the same as arranging a qualifying direct exchange. Do not assume an IRA rollover procedure applies to a personal nonqualified contract.

Bring the dates to an insurance review

Have your current statement, relevant contract pages and insurer notice available. Identify the owner, account registration, date requiring action, intended income timing and access needs. First Freedom Life can discuss insurance-contract questions and available options; the issuing insurer confirms official values and deadlines. Tax and legal questions require the appropriate professional.

Frequently asked questions

Is an annuity maturity date the same as its rate-guarantee end?

Not necessarily. The interest-guarantee period, surrender-charge period and scheduled annuity date can address different provisions. Confirm each date and its consequences in your own contract.

Does being out of surrender mean a withdrawal is tax-free?

No. Ending an applicable surrender-charge period does not remove tax rules or establish the effect on other benefits. Request a dated issuer quote and review tax treatment before withdrawing.

Must I replace an annuity when a period ends?

No automatic replacement conclusion follows. Compare the options permitted by your current contract, including keeping it when available, with the costs and benefits of any proposed change.

Who can confirm what happens at my maturity date?

The issuing insurer can confirm official dates, available elections, deadlines and values. An insurance professional can discuss contract choices; tax and legal professionals address their respective questions.
