Athene Performance Elite: compare growth with access
Athene Performance Elite is a fixed indexed annuity family oriented toward accumulation. The 7, 10 and 15 versions and their Plus options should be compared as different contract choices, not ranked by the largest advertised bonus. Start with how long you can leave money committed and what access you may need.
This is an educational review of public product materials. First Freedom Life is an independent insurance business, not Athene’s servicing department. Existing policyholders should request official values and transaction instructions from the issuing insurer. Any offer depends on current contract, state and distributor requirements.
Read the crediting choices and charges together
The family offers fixed and indexed strategies. Indexed interest follows contract rules; it is not the index’s full investment return. Some strategy choices carry a charge. A higher cap or participation rate should be assessed with that cost and the possibility of little or no credited interest. Review Athene’s current product overview and the actual disclosure.
Ask for the same funding amount and time horizon across alternatives. Identify which illustration values are guaranteed, which use assumptions, and which terms can change at renewal. A favorable historical scenario is not a forecast of your outcome.
A premium bonus has conditions
Bonus availability differs across the family. Where applicable, early withdrawals or surrender can trigger a premium bonus vesting adjustment. Bonus designs may also use lower crediting limits than comparable contracts without a bonus. The initial increase in a displayed value does not tell you the amount available if plans change.
Request a year-by-year view of accumulated value and cash surrender value. Ask what happens if you withdraw more than the free amount, and whether bonus vesting, withdrawal charges and a market value adjustment affect the same transaction. Athene’s consumer brochure separates these provisions.
Check what the Plus liquidity rider adds
Performance Elite Plus includes a liquidity rider with a charge. The family’s free-withdrawal rules differ by version; Plus features also have timing and eligibility conditions. Do not assume a benefit shown for one version applies to all contracts, or that a return-of-premium provision means immediate unrestricted access.
Discuss a realistic unexpected expense: what could you withdraw in that year, what would remain, and which costs or adjustments would apply? Keep a separate plan for cash needed outside the annuity. The brochure’s state limitations also matter when reviewing care-related waivers or enhanced annuitization options.
Bring the decision back to your retirement needs
Decide whether your main task is accumulating savings, securing a particular income payment or preserving access. Do not treat an accumulation illustration as a guaranteed lifetime withdrawal quote. If income is the goal, ask how it would actually be established and compare the relevant contract provisions.
The NAIC overview helps distinguish annuity categories. Investor.gov describes long-term commitments and insurer payment risk. Bring any existing annuity’s benefits and surrender quote to a comparison before considering a replacement. An inquiry starts a discussion; no named product, return or transaction is promised.
Frequently asked questions
Are Performance Elite 7, 10 and 15 identical apart from duration?
No. The brochure describes differences in bonus and withdrawal provisions, and Plus includes additional rider features. Review the specific contract rather than transferring terms from another version.
Is the premium bonus immediately available without conditions?
Do not assume that. Where applicable, withdrawals or surrender beyond free allowances can trigger a bonus vesting adjustment. Ask for the current cash surrender value and relevant schedule.
Does Performance Elite Plus have a rider charge?
Yes. Athene describes a charge for the liquidity rider included with Plus. Confirm the current amount, assessment method and features for the contract being considered.
Does an illustrated accumulation value establish lifetime income?
No. Ask how income would be established and which contract provisions govern the payment. A growth illustration by itself is not a guaranteed lifetime withdrawal quote.
