First Freedom Life is a veteran-owned independent insurance brokerage. Product availability, guarantees, costs, taxation, and suitability vary.

Start with your existing policy, not a new application

If you already own cash-value life insurance, contact the insurer listed on your statement and ask whether the contract currently has available loan value. A death benefit is not the amount you can borrow. Ask for current figures rather than relying on the illustration you received when you bought the policy.

What to request before submitting a loan

  1. Available loan value: confirm today's maximum, existing debt, and any amount reserved for interest or charges.
  2. Loan terms: ask whether the rate is fixed or adjustable, when interest is charged, and how borrowing affects policy crediting or dividends.
  3. An in-force illustration: request a projection including your proposed loan, future premiums, and repayment plan, with guaranteed and non-guaranteed values separated.
  4. The insurer's request process: confirm owner authorization, required forms, delivery method, and processing time. Do not assume same-day funds.
  5. A follow-up schedule: decide how you will pay interest and monitor remaining value. Keep insurer notices and review the policy after material changes.

Loan, withdrawal, or surrender?

These are different transactions. A policy loan creates debt against available policy value. A withdrawal removes value under the contract's rules; surrender ends the policy. Ask the insurer for a written comparison of the effect on cash value, death benefit, charges, and potential tax reporting before choosing.

Illustrative interest checkβ€”not a policy quote

If a hypothetical $10,000 loan carried 6% simple annual interest for one full year, the interest would be $600. Your contract may calculate or capitalize interest differently. This example does not include policy charges or predict crediting; it shows why an interest-payment plan matters.

For broader borrowing risks, read our policy loan guide. The New York insurance regulator's consumer guide explains cash-value policies and loan provisions. Tax-free access is not unconditional: ask a qualified tax professional about your contract and transaction. IRS Publication 525 explains that cash-surrender proceeds above policy cost can be taxable.

Risks and guardrails

Cash-value policies have costs, surrender schedules, and loan interest. If premiums are underfunded or loans are unmanaged, the policy can underperform or lapse. Tax consequences can happen if a policy is mishandled.

That is why policy design, annual reviews, conservative assumptions, and realistic funding are more important than a flashy sales illustration.

How First Freedom Life reviews it

First Freedom Life compares whole life, IUL, and other options through the lens of protection, liquidity, tax treatment, and long-term funding. We explain what the policy can do and what it cannot do.

The right policy should protect the family, fit the budget, and give the owner clear rules for accessing cash value safely.

Next step

If you want a real comparison instead of generic internet advice, First Freedom Life can review your age, health, budget, goals, and timeline, then show which carriers and policy structures fit. The review is designed to make the decision clear before you apply.
