Review the contract behind the quoted rate
Nationwide Secure Growth is a single-purchase-payment deferred fixed annuity issued by Nationwide Life Insurance Company. It is designed to accumulate money under fixed interest terms. The useful comparison includes how long those terms apply, when you can access the money and what happens after the initial guarantee period.
Nationwide’s Secure Growth overview describes the product. We do not publish a live rate or rank it as the best contract. Ask for a current state-approved illustration using your funding amount and the exact options available to you.
Identify the rate period and the renewal decision
The product guide describes guaranteed rate periods followed by annual renewal rates. An initial rate is not a promise that the same rate continues for the contract’s entire life. Before buying, ask when the guaranteed rate ends, how renewal rates are determined and which minimum guarantees apply to the issued contract.
Record the interest-guarantee end date, withdrawal-charge end date and contract maturity date separately. Confirm the relationship between those dates in the current contract rather than inferring it from a product name or a term on a rate sheet. Our existing MYGA guide explains the broader rate-period and renewal questions.
Read withdrawal charges and any MVA together
The Secure Growth product guide describes contingent deferred sales charges and a possible market value adjustment. An MVA can increase or decrease an applicable withdrawal amount. A fixed crediting rate therefore should not be interpreted as an unconditional promise that an early surrender returns every dollar.
Request the surrender value for a date when you might realistically need the money. Ask which withdrawals avoid specified charges, how an allowance is calculated and what happens if you exceed it. A health-related waiver, required distribution or other exception must meet the contract’s conditions; do not assume it applies to every withdrawal.
Consider the return-of-payment option as a tradeoff
Nationwide describes an optional Return of Purchase Payment Rider with conditions. Its guide states that electing it can result in a lower credited interest rate. The name should not be read as unrestricted access or an unconditional refund of all money and earnings.
Ask to compare the same premium and selected period with and without the available option. Request written answers about prior withdrawals, applicable premium taxes and what amount the rider protects. If you may need near-term access, begin with that requirement before deciding whether a restricted annuity fits.
Separate accumulation, income and taxes
Secure Growth can offer income through annuitization, but a credited interest rate and a retirement paycheck are different figures. Ask what payout election would be required, when payments would begin, what beneficiary provisions would remain and how access changes after that election.
IRS Publication 575 explains that pension and annuity tax treatment depends on the arrangement and distributions. Identify whether the proposed money is after-tax savings, retirement-account funds or an existing annuity. Tax deferral does not mean withdrawals are automatically tax-free; have a tax professional review your circumstances.
Bring the details that make a comparison useful
Bring your state, intended amount, proposed funding source and the dates when you might need access. Keep emergency reserves and expected near-term expenses in view. If replacing another contract, compare surrender costs, benefits you would lose and the new restriction period before authorizing movement.
Use our existing Nationwide annuity comparison for the wider carrier discussion. First Freedom Life is an independent insurance brokerage, not Nationwide’s account-service department. Product availability and suitability require confirmation for your state and circumstances. Guarantees depend on the issuing insurer’s claims-paying ability. An annuity is not a bank deposit or FDIC-insured product. This is insurance education, not tax, legal or investment advice.
Frequently asked questions
Is the initial Secure Growth rate guaranteed forever?
The product guide describes selected guarantee periods followed by annual renewal rates. Confirm the initial period, renewal provisions and minimum guarantees in the actual contract.
Can a fixed annuity lose value if I leave early?
Early withdrawals or surrender can be reduced by contract charges and an applicable market value adjustment. Review the surrender value rather than relying only on the credited rate.
Does the Return of Purchase Payment Rider provide unrestricted access?
No. The rider has conditions and can result in a lower credited rate. Confirm what it protects after prior withdrawals and applicable premium taxes.
Does a stated rate also specify my monthly retirement income?
No. Credited interest and income payments are separate figures. An income election and current illustration are needed to establish the payment terms.
