A crediting floor is not a floor under your entire retirement
An indexed universal life policy can limit negative index-based interest credits under its contract. That is different from guaranteeing that its net cash value never falls. Insurance charges, withdrawals, and policy debt still matter. IUL is life insurance, not direct ownership of an index and not protection for losses in a separate brokerage or retirement account.
The policy uses life insurance mechanics, flexible premiums, cost of insurance charges, and index-linked crediting formulas. Caps, floors, participation rates, spreads, and loan design all affect whether the strategy works.
How a zero-credit year can still reduce policy value
Consider a simplified example: a policy starts with $100,000 of account value, receives no new premium, earns a zero interest credit, and incurs $3,000 of policy charges. Ignoring all other transactions and timing differences, the remaining account value is $97,000. The crediting floor has not reimbursed the charges.
These numbers are hypothetical arithmetic, not a carrier illustration or expected cost. Actual deductions occur on the contract's schedule. Cash surrender value, available loan value, and account value may differ; ask for all three rather than relying on a single headline balance.
Stress-test the years when you expect to take income
Projected policy loans are not guaranteed retirement payments. A weak crediting period while loans accumulate can leave less room for future charges and borrowing. A policy that looks comfortable during accumulation may require changes once distributions begin.
- Lower-credit scenario: request several low or zero-credit years near the planned start of distributions, not just one constant average rate.
- Loan-cost scenario: compare the contractual loan charge with the crediting treatment of borrowed value. Do not assume a positive spread.
- Funding interruption: show what happens if a premium is missed or reduced, including any conditions on a no-lapse guarantee.
- Longer life: show values and coverage beyond the initial retirement-income period, not just through the first few years.
- Corrective action: identify when premiums must rise, loans must fall, or repayments are needed to keep the policy in force.
Separate protection, liquidity, and dependable income
If your central need is life insurance with potential long-term cash value, an IUL review may be relevant. If your immediate concern is paying essential retirement bills, first identify reliable income and accessible reserves. An IUL illustration should not be treated as a pension.
For contract-defined income options, read our guaranteed retirement income guide. Annuities have their own access limits, costs, and insurer-backed guarantees; they are not interchangeable with IUL. The useful comparison starts with the job each product must do.
Review an existing policy before replacing it
Bring your latest annual statement, current loan balance, and a fresh in-force illustration. Compare the guaranteed and nonguaranteed columns, surrender charges, and funding requirements. Market anxiety alone is not a reason to surrender existing protection or move retirement money into a new policy.
Loans and withdrawals can reduce benefits. A lapse or surrender with outstanding debt can create taxable income; modified endowment contracts have different tax rules. First Freedom Life can review policy mechanics, while a qualified tax professional evaluates your circumstances. See IUL benefits and tradeoffs for the broader decision.
