TSGLI is traumatic-injury protection associated with SGLI. It provides short-term financial support for qualifying losses following a traumatic injuryβnot a general life-insurance quote or a payment for every diagnosis.

Who may qualify for TSGLI?
VA generally requires SGLI coverage when the injury occurred, a qualifying scheduled loss caused by that injury, injury before separation, loss within 730 days, and survival for at least 168 hours. Qualifying service categories include active duty, Reserve and National Guard members. Exclusions and special retroactive rules apply. Review the complete VA TSGLI eligibility requirements rather than treating this summary as an eligibility decision.
How much can TSGLI pay?
VA describes payments of $25,000 to $100,000. The amount depends on the covered loss and program rules; it is not automatically the maximum.
The official TSGLI loss standards distinguish losses such as sight, hearing, amputations, qualifying hospitalization and inability to perform activities of daily living. Different categories have different definitions and duration requirements. Multiple losses do not necessarily mean that their listed amounts can simply be added together. Start with the specific loss standard, not just the injury's name.
How to file a TSGLI claim
Use SGLV 8600, the Application for TSGLI Benefits, through the VA page linked above. Follow the current form's instructions and submit it to the listed office for your branch of service. Coverage does not mean payment is automatic: a claim is required. First Freedom Life's inquiry form is not a TSGLI application.
What if a claim was denied or the payment seems too low?
Read your decision letter before choosing a next step. VA's guidance on reviewing a TSGLI payment directs claimants to their uniformed service's TSGLI office. Use official instructions for the applicable review process; do not send claim records or medical evidence through our insurance quote form.
TSGLI and private life insurance serve different needs
Do not assume a private living-benefit rider replaces TSGLI or has matching eligibility and payment rules. For a separate family-protection review, compare the actual policy's qualifying events, exclusions, costs and death-benefit effects. Keep benefit-claim questions with the appropriate program office and private-policy questions with the issuing insurer or your insurance professional.
First Freedom Life is an independent, veteran-owned brokerage, not the VA or a TSGLI claims office. If your next question is how to protect your family's income after separation, our existing inquiry form can start a separate life-insurance comparison. You do not need to buy a private policy to use the official TSGLI resources above.
