SGLI, VGLI, or private insurance: what actually changes?

SGLI: coverage tied to eligible military service

SGLI is group term life insurance for eligible service members. It ordinarily continues free for 120 days after separation; qualifying disabled members may be eligible for an extension. A private policy can supplement military coverage, but it is not automatically a better replacement.

VGLI: continue coverage after service

VGLI is renewable term coverage for eligible former service members. Premiums depend on age and coverage amount. Its no-health-review enrollment window can be especially important when a medical condition makes individually underwritten coverage expensive or unavailable.

Private insurance: compare a specific policy, not a category

Compare an actual private term or permanent-policy offer with the coverage you already have. Check the guaranteed premium period, benefit amount, exclusions, approval requirements and what happens later. A new application and a protected conversion are different routes; do not assume a private quote includes conversion rights or guaranteed acceptance.

Three transition deadlines to check before you shop

  • 120 days: the ordinary SGLI post-service continuation period, and the window to convert SGLI to eligible individual permanent coverage through a participating insurer without proof of good health.
  • 240 days: eligible applicants can apply for VGLI without a health review within this period after separation.
  • 1 year and 120 days: the standard VGLI application deadline; applying after the first 240 days requires health evidence.

Confirm your eligibility, separation date and any disability-extension rules with VA or OSGLI. An application deadline is not a promise of uninterrupted coverage. Keep existing protection until replacement coverage is approved and effective.

What does SGLI not cover?

Do not assume SGLI has the same exclusions as a private policy. VA explains that SGLI and VGLI do not exclude a death simply because it involves war or terrorism. VA separately lists narrow legal forfeiture rules, including findings of guilt for mutiny, treason, spying or desertion. Eligibility and whether coverage is in force still matter; confirm an individual coverage or claim question with VA or OSGLI.

SGLI and TSGLI are not the same benefit. SGLI provides life-insurance protection. TSGLI provides support for qualifying traumatic injuries and scheduled losses, with its own eligibility requirements and exclusions. A TSGLI exclusion should not be treated as an exclusion from the SGLI death benefit.

When comparing private coverage, read that specific policy's exclusions and effective-date requirements. Do not cancel existing military coverage based on a general comparison.

VGLI vs. SBP: life insurance and survivor income are different

VGLI is renewable term life insurance. The military Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) provides an ongoing monthly annuity to eligible survivors after a covered member dies. SBP is not VGLI, and it is not a commercial annuity purchased from First Freedom Life.

  • VGLI comparison: consider the life-insurance benefit amount, age-based premiums, beneficiaries and continued coverage requirements.
  • SBP comparison: consider the elected coverage, eligible survivor, monthly payment, cost-of-living adjustments and program rules. DFAS explains that the benefit can be up to 55% of retired pay, depending on the coverage elected.

A life-insurance coverage amount and a monthly survivor-income payment are not interchangeable numbers. Compare the survivor's ongoing expenses separately from debts and other one-time needs. Do not assume buying private insurance replaces an SBP election or that you can easily undo an election later; confirm your options with your service retirement counselor or DFAS before making changes.

Why this matters for veterans and military families

Military coverage is valuable, but it does not always solve the private family-protection problem after separation, retirement, disability, a mortgage, or a business transition. SGLI vs. Private Life Insurance: What Every Veteran Needs to Know should be reviewed as part of a complete protection plan, not as a one-line benefit decision.

The right answer depends on age, health, VA disability context, family obligations, mortgage balance, and whether the veteran needs temporary protection, permanent coverage, living benefits, or cash-value planning.

What to compare before choosing

Compare premium changes over time, portability, conversion rules, underwriting, death benefit amount, rider language, and whether the coverage still fits the family ten or twenty years from now. A cheap starting premium can become expensive if the structure changes with age.

Veterans should also compare private carrier options because underwriting appetite varies. One carrier may be cautious with a diagnosis while another may understand the risk more accurately.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not assume a government or employer benefit is enough just because it exists. Also do not cancel existing coverage until replacement coverage is approved and in force. Gaps can leave a family exposed.

Another mistake is buying only around death benefit and ignoring living benefits, mortgage duration, spouse income needs, or long-term affordability.

How First Freedom Life reviews it

First Freedom Life is veteran-owned, so the review starts with the actual transition from military benefits to private planning. We compare VGLI, private term, permanent insurance, IUL, whole life, and living-benefit options where appropriate.

The goal is a clear recommendation: what to keep, what to replace, what to avoid, and what coverage amount actually protects the household.

Next step

If you want a real comparison instead of generic internet advice, First Freedom Life can review your age, health, budget, goals, and timeline, then show which carriers and policy structures fit. The review is designed to make the decision clear before you apply.
