Can you keep FEGLI after retirement?

You may be able to continue eligible Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance coverage when you retire. Your enrollment history, retirement eligibility and the coverage you elect matter. Before comparing a private policy, get an accurate statement of the federal coverage you can retain and how its benefit and premium would change.

OPM’s retirement-life-insurance answers describe the continuation requirements, including the usual five-year coverage history or the applicable shorter period of eligibility. They also address retirement timing and the MRA-plus-10 postponement situation. Ask your agency or OPM to confirm your own eligibility and records.

Make an inventory before choosing a reduction

List your Basic coverage, any Option A, B or C coverage, and the multiples you currently have. Confirm which amounts qualify to continue. Then write down the family need: a mortgage, a surviving partner’s expenses, support for another dependent, final expenses or a lasting legacy.

A federal retirement annuity mentioned in OPM’s eligibility rules is a retirement-system benefit. Buying an insurance-company annuity does not establish eligibility to retain FEGLI. Keep the program decision and any separate retirement-insurance comparison clearly identified.

Understand the Basic and Optional coverage choices

The OPM Guide for Retiring Employees explains these Basic reduction choices. Scheduled reductions begin in the second month after age 65 or retirement, whichever is later; confirm the timing and your election with OPM.

Basic electionCoverage pattern described by OPM
75% ReductionThe benefit gradually reduces until 25% of the original Basic amount remains.
50% ReductionThe benefit gradually reduces until 50% of the original Basic amount remains.
No ReductionThe Basic amount does not undergo the scheduled reduction.

The extra premium for Basic 50% Reduction or No Reduction can continue after the regular Basic premium ends. “No Reduction” does not mean no continuing cost. Use the official estimate for your coverage and retirement date rather than a generic online price.

Optional coverage has separate rules. Option A has an automatic reduction. Eligible Option B and C multiples have Full Reduction or No Reduction choices; full-reduction multiples eventually reach zero. Do not treat the Basic election as an election for every other coverage component.

Compare private insurance against the same family need

Compare the benefit at future ages, the premium schedule and the period you need protection. A private term policy generally covers a defined period. Permanent life insurance may address a longer need, with its own funding requirements and contract values. Keep guaranteed benefits separate from illustrated assumptions.

The NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide discusses these tradeoffs, affordability and application information. Private coverage may require health review and can be declined or priced differently than expected. A comparison does not establish that replacing FEGLI is available, cheaper or appropriate.

You might review keeping the federal coverage, supplementing a specific gap or evaluating a replacement. Start with the need and available choices. A lower first premium does not answer what the family would have later.

Understand the consequence before reducing existing coverage

OPM’s retiree cancellation guidance states that a retiree cannot increase or reinstate coverage after reducing or cancelling it. Review that consequence with the official program before authorizing a change. Keep existing coverage in place while any private replacement is reviewed, approved, accepted and put into force.

FEGLI concerns civilian federal life insurance. Military SGLI and VGLI have their own rules; our VGLI alternatives guide addresses that separate topic. A TSP rollover decision also requires its own review and does not change FEGLI eligibility.

Start with a private life-insurance comparison

First Freedom Life is a private, independent insurance brokerage. Use the inquiry above to discuss your family’s protection goal, state, age, existing coverage and premium budget. Direct federal eligibility, elections, claims and record changes to your agency or OPM. Insurance choices remain subject to underwriting, insurer approval, policy terms and availability.

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone keep FEGLI automatically after retirement?

No universal eligibility assumption should be made. Ask your agency or OPM to verify your enrollment history, retirement circumstances and the coverage amounts that qualify to continue.

Does Basic No Reduction mean FEGLI is free?

No. The additional premium for Basic No Reduction can continue after the regular Basic premium ends. Confirm your official coverage and premium estimate before choosing.

Can I restore FEGLI after cancelling it as a retiree?

OPM says that a retiree cannot increase or reinstate coverage after reducing or cancelling it. Confirm the official consequences for your circumstances before authorizing any change.

Will private life insurance necessarily cost less than FEGLI?

No savings or approval is promised. Compare the actual benefits, future premiums, duration and underwriting result. A private quote is not a reason to cancel existing protection before appropriate replacement coverage is in force.
