First Freedom Life is a veteran-owned independent insurance brokerage. Product availability, guarantees, costs, taxation, and suitability vary.
There is no automatic veteran advantage built into IUL
IUL is a private life insurance contract, not a VA benefit. Being a veteran does not by itself guarantee acceptance, a special crediting rate, or better results than VGLI. The useful question is whether permanent protection and a long-term funding commitment fit your household.
Start with protection needs, not a switch
List the people who depend on your income, debts that would remain, and how long support is needed. Separate temporary needs from lifelong obligations. You may need term coverage, permanent coverage, existing VGLI, or a combination rather than one policy doing every job.
If you are separating from service, protect applicable enrollment and conversion deadlines while reviewing private options. The VA's guide for people with preexisting conditions explains routes that do not require the same health review as a new underwritten policy.
What to bring to an IUL review
- Existing coverage: benefit amount, premium, beneficiaries, and renewal or conversion information.
- Health history: accurate diagnoses, treatment, medications, and relevant records requested by the insurer. Do not put medical details in a public comment or unsecured message.
- Affordable funding: the amount you can maintain after essential spending and emergency reserves, including during a job transition.
- Time horizon: when you might need policy value and whether you could wait if early surrender values are limited.
Read the illustration as a set of conditions
Compare guaranteed and nonguaranteed values, charges, surrender provisions, and the funding needed under lower crediting assumptions. A planned premium is not proof that the same amount will sustain coverage indefinitely. Index-linked crediting is not direct stock-market participation, and a crediting floor does not eliminate policy charges.
Living-benefit riders also need their own review: qualifying conditions, exclusions, fees, and effects on the remaining death benefit differ. Do not assume every policy includes every benefit at no cost.
Protect existing coverage through underwriting
A quote is not an approval. Keep existing coverage while an application is evaluated; any replacement decision should wait until the new coverage is approved, accepted, paid for as required, and confirmed in force. Review any lost rights or replacement costs first. A VA disability rating is not the same thing as a private insurer's underwriting classification.
For a side-by-side decision, use our VGLI versus IUL comparison. First Freedom Life can review the actual proposals without assuming a switch is the right outcome.
