Compare two different coverage designs
VGLI is renewable group term life insurance. IUL is private permanent life insurance with index-linked crediting potential and policy charges. Neither is automatically the better choice for every veteran. Compare the same death benefit and the same protection period before discussing additional features.
Health access and conversion are not interchangeable
The VA provides a VGLI application window following separation, with a period during which health evidence is not required. Check your dates directly with the VA before relying on a private-policy quote. An underwritten IUL application follows the private carrier's requirements.
Do not confuse replacing VGLI with exercising its conversion right. The VA's VGLI guidance identifies eligible permanent conversion policies and excludes universal life from that conversion route. A new IUL application should not be presented as a guaranteed VGLI conversion.
Five comparisons to put on paper
- Protection: compare the death benefit needed today and later, including any effect of policy debt.
- Premiums: examine VGLI's age-based schedule alongside IUL's proposed funding and guaranteed assumptions. Flexible premiums are not a promise of level lifetime costs.
- Cash value: VGLI is term coverage, not a savings account. IUL may build value, but early accessible amounts and long-term projections depend on the contract and funding.
- Health and access: compare actual eligibility and an issued offer, not a best-case advertised quote.
- Administration: consider whether you are willing and able to review credits, charges, loans, and funding throughout the policy's life.
When keeping VGLI deserves serious consideration
If health makes private coverage unavailable or expensive, existing VGLI may be especially valuable. It may also fit someone who wants straightforward death-benefit protection without managing a cash-value strategy. Review affordability over time, but do not sacrifice current access for an unapproved alternative.
When to evaluate IUL or another private option
A review may be useful when permanent coverage is needed and funding is sustainable. Include private term and whole life where appropriate; the comparison should not be limited to VGLI versus IUL. An attractive cash-value illustration alone does not establish that the policy fits.
Use our veteran IUL application checklist to prepare questions about underwriting and funding. If the main goal is retirement income rather than life insurance protection, evaluate that goal separately.
Use a no-gap replacement sequence
Keep existing coverage through the application and underwriting process. Review the final approved policy, premium requirements, exclusions, and any rights you would lose. Do not cancel current coverage until replacement coverage is confirmed in force and you have decided the change is appropriate. First Freedom Life can help compare the documents without assuming that switching is necessary.
