Four numbers that should not be confused
- Premiums paid: what you have contributed. This is not automatically the amount available to withdraw.
- Cash or account value: value calculated under the policy's provisions. Read how your insurer labels it.
- Cash surrender value: ask what would actually be payable if you ended coverage, after applicable charges and debt.
- Death benefit: protection payable under the contract after death, subject to its terms. It is not a savings balance you can spend today.
Read the annual statement as a reconciliation
Start with last year's ending value. Locate premium payments, credited interest or other additions, policy and rider charges, withdrawals, and outstanding loans. Ask the insurer to explain how those entries lead to this year's reported value. Different policy types use different mechanics, so a universal-life account calculation should not be treated as a whole-life guarantee schedule.
The New York regulator's illustration guidance describes annual reporting elements including credited and debited amounts, surrender value, and outstanding loans. Use your own contract and statement for the applicable figures.
Why a 0% index floor does not mean zero change in value
In an indexed policy, a floor describes the applicable index-crediting calculation, not every movement in the policy. Insurance charges, other expenses, withdrawals, and loan effects must still be considered. Ask for the statement's actual credited interest and deductions rather than inferring account performance from an index headline.
Compare guarantees with projections
Request the guaranteed values and the assumptions behind projected values. Ask what changes if future crediting or dividends are lower, you contribute less, or you borrow. The NAIC illustration overview explains why guaranteed and non-guaranteed elements need to be distinguished.
Continue with whole life versus IUL for policy-type differences, or how to request a policy loan if your question is access rather than accumulation.
Risks and guardrails
Cash-value policies have costs, surrender schedules, and loan interest. If premiums are underfunded or loans are unmanaged, the policy can underperform or lapse. Tax consequences can happen if a policy is mishandled.
That is why policy design, annual reviews, conservative assumptions, and realistic funding are more important than a flashy sales illustration.
How First Freedom Life reviews it
First Freedom Life compares whole life, IUL, and other options through the lens of protection, liquidity, tax treatment, and long-term funding. We explain what the policy can do and what it cannot do.
The right policy should protect the family, fit the budget, and give the owner clear rules for accessing cash value safely.
Next step
If you want a real comparison instead of generic internet advice, First Freedom Life can review your age, health, budget, goals, and timeline, then show which carriers and policy structures fit. The review is designed to make the decision clear before you apply.
